I've spoke with customers Many times about this subject, "fiber content and the weave" play a big role on wearability. An easy way I've found to explain the differance is compared to "Sheet counts" as in bedding.( most people understand this logic) The Higher the number the better the sheets, Same is true in fabrics, I tell my customer's that if you hold the fabric up to light and you see alot of light shining thru. then the quality isn't as good as one that doesn't show as much light thru.. Also, anything with a lower grade synthetic content, like Olfin will pil naturally with ingress/regress wear.. ( nothing worst then a customer unhappy with piling) this is way I explain up front what will happen in time. it's then up to them if they want stick with their selection. Also, about internet fabrics being sold. Most of what I've worked with, it seems the screen printing has flaws running thru which have to be cut around costing the customer more in fabric. Upholstery Fabrics / La Costa Upholstery

Before making a final selection of fabric on your project consult with your Upholsterer. Many decisions on fabric are merely chosen based on color alone. Textures are just as important.

I would also add the the fiber content and the weave or how tight the fabric is will determine
how well it will wear. Too many times I seen clients not look at the weave , when  it's too loose the fabric wears faster and looks old and thread bear . The lower grade fabrics , many made in China that are being put on new furniture from China just do last. That is why much of today's new furniture is so inexpensive . It just doesn't last, you can never go wrong when you but quality.  And many fabrics are not meant to be used as upholstery fabric.If it's too light weight it may need to be backed , and that adds cost to the fabric. The fabric may be too loosely woven ( you can see through the weave) and again it just will not wear well. So before you do buy your own show a piece to your upholsterer and get their opinion .
