I talked about thread count, now I tell about fiber content. One of the things that make upholstery fabrics different the thread count, an other part of the fabric is what the fabric is made of. Fiber content can make fabric soft or rough, it can made colors bright of muted and it be the difference in how long a fabric with last.

Fabrics with rayon ( i know you hate it clothing) but it's great in upholstery fabric. It is very durable, the dyes in rayon are brighter and have better separation between colors. Cottons also have dye brighter and have good color separation and can be durable. Fibers that have tighter spun threads are not going to fray or pell and start looking worn and tired after a short time. The lower prices fabrics look old and worn where fabrics with better fiber contents look better and last longer and that makes them a better value. You get what you pay for and in the world of furniture.

Upholstery Fabrics Are Not All Made the Same

If you have gone shopping for upholstery fabrics and asked yourself why are some fabrics $50 per yard and others $19.95 per yard? How can the outlet stores sell fabric for $19.95 and what looks like the same fabric sell for $39.95 at an upholstery shop? Well not all fabrics are made the same, many companies make different grades of fabrics in the same patterns. This companies make lower grade fabric just for the outlet market . The difference is the fiber content, the thread count and the weight of the fabric.
