Why do my patio cushions wear out so fast?

When you buy patio cushions in the Big Box stores there are not made from the best materials available. The fabric is not usually made of acrylic and doesn't hold up to sun and water. The fill material is often just poly fill or low grade foam and is not firm enough to take the weight of people sitting on it. So cushions may only last a one year or two.

What do I look for in a good upholstery fabric?

When you are trying to find a good material to put on your furniture here are some good things to look for. First of course find the colors and patterns that you like. Then find a fabric that has a good abrasion rating 15000 to 50000 double rubs , this will tell you how well a fabric will wear.
Fiber content will tell you something about how well a fabric will clean, synthetic materials repel stains and fade less then most natural materials.
