Upholstery Fabrics , What to look for ?

Finding the right fabric to upholster your furniture can be made easy with a little knowledge. Like anything in life knowing what to look for is the key to making the right chose.

First look at the double rubs or abrasion rating . On most fabrics samples you see a number from 5000 to 200,000 .
Usually the more the better , but if the number is real high the fabric may be stiff and not comfortable to sit up. And a low number will not wear well and need to be replaced.
I tell clients that if you are going to use your furniture start at 25,000 double rubs and go up from there.

Thicker fabric don't always last longer than thinner fabrics.
Why? Here's our second point , thread count. The more threads
per inch the tighter the weave and better the fabric wears.

The third thing to consider when looking for fabrics is the fiber
content. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen will fade sooner then synthetics like polyester and nylon.
Today polyester is used in many fabrics because it wears very well
it does fade as fast as cotton and it cleans very well.
Don't be afraid to use rayon it's great in upholstery fabric .
Blends of cotton and polyester feel good and wear well .

Furniture was made from solid wood not particle board( sawdust and glue) it had steel springs not elastic wedding ( rubber bands) . Today's furniture is made to last a few years and then you throw it away and get a new one. Don't add to the ever growing problem of waste. Re-cycle your furniture by re upholstering it .

Look for performance that goes to the core, meaning that instead of a resistant coating on the top of the fabric, the performance attributes are part of the fiber that makes up the fabric itself. There is no substitute for Quality

There is no substitute for Quality. The is more true today in the fabric and furniture industry. Cheap imports in both fabric and upholstered furniture have flooded the market over the last 20 years .
Jerry is selling $ 500 sofas , they have to cut corners to make a profit , so where is this happen? In the frames that are made of plywood and particle board ( Jerry sometimes calles it engineered wood) it's saw dust and glue. , in the cushions with the lowest grade of foam and in the springs, there are now using elastic webbing not steel springs. If you have an older chair , sofa or love seat save it re upholster it , invest in it. Don't but throw away furniture that you have to replace every few years.
