Is it worth the cost to reupholster old furniture?

Yvette Bonilla knew she could have bought new furniture for less than the $6,000 it cost to reupholster her old furniture.
But the Atlantic Beach, N.Y., resident liked her old furniture — a sofa, two club chairs, a side chair and six dining room chairs — and wanted to maintain the set.
Another reason: Quality. Her older furniture still felt sturdy, and she knew the couch and chairs would last longer than newer, cheaper pieces of furniture.
“It really came down to the quality,” she says.
How much does it cost to reupholster a sofa
Consumers should consider the quality of furniture and its sentimental value before deciding whether to reupholster or replace, according to highly rated furniture repair companies. A new couch or chair might cost less than reupholstery but not last as long as older, quality furniture.
Consumers need to consider the following factors when deciding whether to repair or replace their worn couches and chairs:

What’s the cost comparison?

Reupholstery can cost just as much as buying new furniture, depending on the work required and fabric used, says Vitian Robinson, owner of highly ratedVitian’s Re-upholstery in Indianapolis, Ind.
For example, if you need a single cushion re-stuffed and reupholstered because your puppy chewed it up, the job may cost about $80. But if your couch needs a full overhaul that involves re-stuffing, reupholstery and repairs to springs or backboards, the job could cost between $700 and $1,200, or more.
Fabric drives the cost, with a typical sofa using about 13 yards of fabric and a typical chair using about 7 yards of fabric, Robinson says. Upholstery fabric typically costs between $20 and $70 per yard or more, depending on quality. So the reupholstery of a typical sofa could cost between $260 and $910, or more, for fabric alone.
The amount of fabric affects labor costs — more fabric means more labor. Intensive or special reupholstery work, such as the following, can increase labor costs:
  • Working on couches with zippers.
  • Attaching, replacing or fixing welt cords, or fabric cords that outline the seams of cushions and pillows.
  • Making sure that shapes and patterns align.
  • Tufting, forming patterns by threading through fabric and tying the ends with buttons or knots.
Whether the cost of reupholstery is worth it depends on the quality and sentimental value of the furniture, says Dan Kim, owner of highly rated Pro Furniture Doctor in Manassas, Va.

What’s the quality of the furniture?

Consider keeping that couch or stuffed chair if the furniture remains sturdy with a quality frame, Robinson says.
Typically, frames last longer in chairs and sofas built 10 to 15 years ago or longer, Kim says. “Old furniture is always better built,” he says.

Many manufacturers lowered their standards in recent years by using woods previously unsuitable for furniture frames, Robinson says. Manufacturers often assemble frames with staples and fast-drying epoxy, as opposed to older furniture, built with strong hardwood and screws, she says. Screws last longer because they don’t loosen as easily as staples.

What are the benefits of reupholstering furniture? See La Costa Upholstery

A professional furniture upholsterer can give your old furniture new life. But be prepared: quality reupholstering can be expensive, so you want to be sure your original furniture is solid, structurally sound or that the sentimental value is worth the investment. And of course you need an upholsterer with local reputation as solid as Grandma’s sofa.

“If you have good quality furniture and you like the style, there’s a big advantage to doing upholstery, because you (can keep that) better quality furniture,” says Scott Worley, namesake of Scott Worley Upholstery in Indianapolis. “A lot of times, people think that if something breaks, they have to replace everything. One thing about repairing something is you can keep the sets together.”

Reupholsterers typically offer hundreds of fabric types, colors and patterns to choose from. Worley takes fabric samples to his customers’ homes to allow them to see the samples in place and offers free pickup and delivery of furniture he reupholsters.

Roger Gureczny of La Costa Upholstery has a showroom where customers can view his full assortment of fabrics. Roger says his customers are mostly looking to update their older furniture.

“It just gets dated and they want to freshen it up,” Roger says. “They’re just tired of the fabric. It seems like interior design goes in waves of what’s popular at the time; whether it’s the mauve era, or now, it seems to be more microfibers,

A reupholsterer can often save a damaged piece of furniture by seamlessly, and sometimes creatively, making a repair.“If you’re expecting upholstery to be cheaper than new furniture, it’s probably not going to be most of the time,” added Roger. “But what you get is attention to detail and a more custom fit. You can address certain issues if you like the furniture you have. You’re going to get something more customized to what you want. You have a wider selection of fabrics you can pick and choose from so you can get the look you want. You get a selection of fabrics, pickup and delivery, and a much more personalized service.” Much of today's new furniture is made from plywood , particle board and cheap webbing. Your older furniture is made from hardwood and has real springs, so it's going to last longer and stand the test of time

Should I Re Upholster my Furniture

Many people have no idea of the costs or benefits in reupholstering a piece of furniture. There are a few factors to consider before deciding if you should invest your money into having this type of service.
First, decide the quality of your piece. A lot of furniture made today is not as well made as it was years ago. If you have a well-built piece, chances are that it's probably worth investing in.
Second, do you like the way the piece "fits" in your room? If you have a small room and your sofa or chairs are just the right size, it may be difficult to replace them with the right fit.
Finally, if you are considering replacing your furniture, are you able to find the perfect fabric that compliments your decor?
A lot of consumers are unaware of what can actually be done with their existing furniture. If the company you hire consists of skilled professionals, they should be able to build, reconstruct and even alter the design of your piece, giving it a new updated look.
Sometimes all that's needed for a droopy seat cushion is some new foam, which is a small fraction of the price of buying new. These are all options that can be discussed with your upholstery professional.
Finding the perfect fabric can be challenging, but if you bring something (like a pillow or arm cap) with you, along with the colors you are trying to match, you can save a lot of time second guessing your choices. In choosing fabric, make sure it is durable.
Additionally, don’t forget to ask your upholsterer what the abrasion cycle is and how to clean it. Most upholstery fabrics are “dry clean only,” but there are more out now that are washable.
If possible, always visit the upholstery shop. Make sure it is clean. Would you want your brand new fabric being applied in a not-so-clean environment? Make sure your work is being done “on site” and not being shipped somewhere else. Look at other pieces they have done and make sure the company you hire is licensed and insured. If they're covered, you're covered.
